HUB History
With a concept in mind and a blank canvas, the (soon to be "HUB Collaborative") group met in Atlanta in August 2019, settling on a plan to apply for a HUD Choice Neighborhood planning grant while concentrating on serving the immediate community during the planning process. This visioning session, led by Doug Neil and Rob Hazelton, and including the Community Foundation for the CSRA, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Augusta, Medical College of Georgia Foundation, the City of Augusta, Good Neighbor Ministries, E3 Leadership Foundation, and Turn Back the Block, confirmed the decision to fully invest in bringing positive change to the Harrisburg and surrounding neighborhoods.
Throughout 2020 and 2021, the group refined the vision - and leveraging the incredible generosity of donors, the Collaborative launched the construction of the HUB for Community Innovation campus. While planning for the HUB was underway, the City of Augusta - under the direction of the Collaborative, secured a Choice Neighborhoods planning grant, leading it and the Housing Authority towards a comprehensive community plan. Simultaneously, the Community Foundation identified and led a small group of grassroots nonprofits working in the Harrisburg community, and walked them through a visioning session of their own.
Since its construction, the HUB has served tens of thousands - through the work of the partners, serving as a Red Cross Disaster Relief site, and the only FEMA recovery center in Richmond County just after Hurricane Helene.
In the near term, the Collaborative is focused on helping provide the neighborhood and surrounding communities access to healthy foods throgh a grocery store partner. The HUB is also working to help develop affordable and mixed-income housing, and expand the educational and wellness activities of the HUB farther into the surrounding neighborhood.

HISTORY
Augusta's Choice
The Choice Neighborhoods project represented a continuation of the investments started at the HUB. The MCG Foundation invested the capital necessary to prepare for the grant’s submission and the team engaged several local and partner organizations to provide additional leverage support to closely match the expected $500K commitment from HUD. This investment was accompanied by letters of commitment from over 40 local organizations, each supporting the Choice Neighborhoods transformation planning process.
On December 9, 2021 after its second attempt, Augusta won a Choice Neighborhoods Planning Grant. This marked the official start of the planning process. See below for access to the full Augusta's Choice Plan in addition to specific sections of the plan.
HISTORY
Community Innovation Campus
While simultaneously working on the Choice Neighborhoods plan, the HUB Collaborative continued its focus on constructing an open door to the community through a two-building Community Innovation campus. While the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Augusta, the Community Foundation of the CSRA and the MCG Foundation worked on designing the campus, the Community Foundation gathered the new HUB tenants (known as "partners") for a visioning exercise that laid the foundation for what became the HUB for Community Innovation. The question was simple - "how could this development wrap its arms around the community as opposed to turning its back on it." The HUB for Community Innovation was announced in November 2020, and broke ground shortly after in April 2021. With construction nearly completed in a short 12-month window, the HUB Augusta Collaborative welcomed the neighborhood to join community leaders and donors to a "sneak peek," which was followed by a community-wide grand opening in the Summer of 2022.
HISTORY
Collaborative Visioning
In September 2025, the HUB Augusta Collaborative led a visioning session with various members of the community. The session, which also included nonprofit, private, and public sector leaders, explored several upward mobility goals for the community - with an emphasis on cradle to career - and was facilitated in collaboration with Delivery Associates and Blue Meridian Partners.
