WHAT WE DO

Community Wellness

The HUB for Community Innovation was always meant to be one of the first pieces of a bigger picture. The Collaborative also had plans to increase the community's access to affordable housing, and put the pieces together early for a submission to HUD for their prized Choice Neighborhoods grant. This grant - which includes both planning and implementation phases - awards competitive grants to redevelop severely distressed HUD housing, catalyze investments in the surrounding neighborhood, and improve the lives of residents of the HUD housing. Similar to the HUB Collaborative, the Choice Neighborhoods program focuses on three core goals:  the development of high-quality mixed-income housing, improving the lives of residents in the targeted housing related to their income and employment, health, and education outcomes; and creating strong, safe, and sustainable neighborhoods.

AUGUSTA'S CHOICE

During the Augusta Choice Neighborhoods assessment process, the team learned that the leading causes of death in Augusta are heart disease and cancer - two conditions which can be substantially mitigated by early recognition and proactive treatment. However, according to the Choice Neighborhood survey of neighborhood residents, over 40% of all adults and 28.8% of children do not have health insurance.

The HUB Augusta Collaborative along with partners at the HUB for Community Innovation are actively partnering with local institutions, including the Medical College of Georgia, the Augusta University Schools of Public Health, and Allied Health, and Piedmont Augusta.
