AUGUSTA, Ga. — The HUB, an outreach project for the CSRA, houses a healthcare center supported by the philanthropic efforts of multiple community organizations. The Harrisburg Family Healthcare Center, located inside the HUB, serves residents of the Harrisburg community and beyond.
Entering the Harrisburg Family Healthcare Center, many find the medical assistance they need from a dedicated team, including Dr. Ebony Whisenant.
“Healthcare is not a one-size-fits-all,” expressed Dr. Whisenant, the medical director of the Harrisburg Family Healthcare Center and a faculty member at Wellstar MCG. The center focuses on providing health services and resources to the under-insured and uninsured.
“At the HUB for Community Innovation, the idea is to provide services to people with dignity, kindness, and respect. At Harrisburg Family Healthcare, we aim to do that in terms of healthcare. I think that is very important because, a lot of times, we meet people at their most vulnerable place,” says Dr. Whisenant.
“Whether it's being evicted from their home with nowhere to go or dealing with domestic violence in the household, they put on a brave face so nobody knows about it. You start to ask yourself, what can I do to make an impact, says Dr. Whisenant.”
The center is within walking distance of the Harrisburg community and features a spacious waiting room and a kids’ corner to keep children entertained. There are half a dozen treatment rooms for patient care, and sometimes that care extends beyond the office.
“It doesn’t cost me too much to go pick up a medication. I treat patients like I treat my family members. So, that’s easy. Would I do it for a family member? Absolutely. So that means I would probably do it for my patients as well,” explains Dr. Whisenant.
Caring for her patients is more than a career for Dr. Whisenant; it is her passion.
“There are so many things that are happening besides your blood pressure, your diabetes, and your cholesterol. There are so many things happening in people's lives,” says Dr. Whisenant.
And Dr. Whisenant plans to be with her patients every step of the way.
